Deakin University Community Bank

In September 2016, Deakin University and the Bendigo Bank launched the first university community bank, the Deakin University Community Bank (DUCB). The DUCB has broken records in its first few months of operation, settling more new loans than any other in the community banking sector. The uptake by Deakin students and staff has exceeded expectations.

Deakin University has a strong commitment to its community which is a value shared by the Bendigo Bank. Deakin staff, students and alumni support their university community by banking with the DUCB, so that profits from the DUCB in turn support University community funded programs.

At the current levels, it is projected that DUCB will be hitting profit in the near future, setting new benchmarks in the Community Banking sector. This success is due to the high degree of commitment and support of by Deakin staff, students and alumni.

Some of the examples of successful engagement campaigns that Deakin have embarked on since the DUCB was launched include: Support of the YMCA’s Walk the Campus: An early morning walk around the campus, provided the opportunity to promote the importance of both physical and financial well-being in a collegiate environment;

• Support of the Deakin University Community Garden: The Community Garden was established with the support of the bank and is providing opportunity for all our Burwood community to participate;

• Bendigo Bank Community Scholarship Program: A scholarship program providing financial assistance for rural/regional students to continue tertiary studies

• Health and wellness day at Deakin’s Waurn Ponds campus for education students

• Support of Faculty of Health project to empower woman to counteract domestic violence
