La Trobe Wellness Walk and Research Run

La Trobe Wellness Walk and Research Run

La Trobe University’s partnership with the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Research Institute (ONJCRI) is a great example of ‘engagement’ through University research which impacts all sectors of the community locally and globally.

La Trobe’s School of Cancer Medicine is located within the ONJCRI, embedded within the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness and Research Centre at the Austin Hospital. Researchers and clinicians work together to translate scientific discovery into new treatments for the ultimate benefit of patients with cancer.

This partnership has now spawned a major annual community event – the Wellness Walk and Research Run which La Trobe hosts on its Bundoora, Melbourne, campus.  This is an annual fun run and walk (5 and 10 km) raising awareness and vital funds for Cancer Research and Wellness programs at the Olivia Newton-John Cancer Wellness & Research Centre. A key outcome of the establishment of this event is that it brings together all demographics of the community as well as showcasing how a University can engage with the wider community, using research and wellness as a catalyst.  It has also provided an opportunity for the University staff and students to be engaged in a major University activity and get a better understanding of the University’s research work, and its impact on both their, and others, lives.

This year, the Run and Walk event will be held on Sunday 17 September at La Trobe University’s Bundoora campus.  Front and centre at the event is Olivia Newton-John herself, along with other profile ambassadors who come together with the community to remember and support those who lives have been touched by cancer.
